Antwerp

Antwerp suits a remote worker who wants Belgian rents below Brussels and Amsterdam, fast coworking and cheap EU-wide mobile data, with Paris, London and Amsterdam reachable by train. The catch is a damp, dark winter and a city that recent arrivals say is safe but slow to make friends in.

A modest month€1,700–2,300

€1,700–2,300 ($1,900–2,600) for a modest month, taking a one-bed at the lower district averages, a Clockwise lounge or Friday flex pass, an Omnipas, an Orange SIM, Basic-Fit and self-catered food; nomads.com's own all-in figures for September 2026 are far higher at $3,780 for an expat and $5,538 for a short-stay nomad, mostly because they price short-term furnished lets. Converted at roughly $1.12 to the euro.

Home and café connections are rarely the problem: nomads.com's September 2026 Antwerp page records a 58 Mbps average and rates wifi as fast, and both Clockwise and Friday Cowork include unlimited high-speed wifi in every pass. On arrival the cheapest local SIM is Proximus at €10 ($11) with 3 GB, and the best-value data is Orange at €15 ($17) for 5 GB, both valid 30 days and usable across the EU at no extra cost; Base sells 4 GB for €15 or 8 GB for €25. Travel eSIMs such as Airalo start around $4.50 and connect before leaving the airport, but a physical SIM from a supermarket or phone shop gives more data per euro.

  • Centrum (old centre)district listing average €1,250 ($1,400), September 2026; CIB put the historic-centre apartment average at €1,128 in spring 2025 with autumn contracts nearer €1,000Most cafés and the largest supply of listings, at the highest rents.

The scene as it stands

Antwerp is a small, wealthy port city rather than a nomad hub. OneCoworking counted three coworking spaces in September 2026, and only two of them publish prices; the busiest laptop cafés are the specialty roasters on Mechelsesteenweg and Paardenmarkt, where the unwritten rule is to buy something every couple of hours and to clear out by late afternoon.

Two of the three spaces sit in the 2060 postcode north of the centre, not in the fashionable Zuid, and Friday Cowork in Berchem is the one that behaves like a members' club, with a garden and a resident desk from €315 a month. A remote worker who needs a desk five days a week pays Clockwise's €131 lounge rate; one who needs a couple of days pays Friday's €99 Flex One.

Where people actually live

Listing averages on Woning Radar in September 2026 run from €970 a month in Antwerpen Noord and Merksem to €1,250 in the old centre, for flats averaging 65 to 90 square metres. The CIB rental barometer, the trade body's own data, put the historic-centre apartment average at €1,128 in spring 2025 and the Flanders-wide one-bedroom average at €795, and reported the slowest rent growth since 2021 at 1.4 per cent.

The Zuid is where most arrivals aim, at a district average of €1,175; Borgerhout and the 2060 district are where the budget-conscious end up, around €975. Furnished short lets cost far more, which is why nomads.com's short-stay figure of $5,538 a month bears no relation to what a 12-month tenant pays.

Money and paperwork

Long-term leases are the norm, typically twelve months with a deposit, and landlords expect a registered address. A De Lijn Omnipas costs €62 a month plus a €10 MOBIB card, single tram and bus tickets €2.50. Basic-Fit charges €24.99 per four weeks on a year contract or €34.98 on a rolling month, with a €19.99 joining fee.

Mobile data is cheap and portable: a €15 Orange or Base prepaid SIM covers 30 days across the EU, so weekend trips to Amsterdam, Paris or Cologne do not need a second plan. Non-EU nationals remain on the 90-in-180-day Schengen count; Belgium has no digital nomad visa.

What recent arrivals report

The nomads.com review page in September 2026 scores Antwerp 2.99 out of 5, ranking it 864th, and the tone of the reviews is consistent: fast internet, clean air, a city that feels safe at night, and a social life that takes real effort. One reviewer who had lived there two years wrote that it is hard to make friends in Antwerp, and nothing in the more recent reviews contradicts it.

The practical complaints are the winter and the cost of eating out, with a coffee around €3.50 and a bar beer around €5.30. The praise is for the commuting radius: Brussels in under an hour, Amsterdam and Paris on direct trains, and a city small enough to cross by bicycle.

Seasons

Spring to early autumn is the window: summer runs at a mild 21°C and the terraces on the Zuid are usable from May. Winter is the reason to stay away, with a median January temperature of 4°C, humidity between 73 and 90 per cent for most of the year and short days; the city functions, but the café-and-walk routine that makes it pleasant does not. Rents are set on 12-month contracts regardless of season, so arrival date changes the weather, not the price.
