The visa · Argentina
Argentina
Argentina runs a purpose-built transitory residence for remote workers under Article 24(h) of the migration law, good for 180 days and renewable once, open only to nationals who already enter without a tourist visa. Longer stays run through the rentista and pensionado categories, both pegged to five minimum wages, or through Mercosur nationality. The thing to settle before applying is that the nomad category is transitory: it is not a step toward permanent residence, and the May 2025 emergency decree has tightened what residence counts for citizenship and what non-residents pay for healthcare.

Nomad visa
Digital Nomad transitory residence
Residencia transitoria — subcategoría nómada digital (Ley 25.871, art. 24 inc. h; Disposición DNM N° 758/2022)
Remote employees and freelancers of foreign companies or clients who hold a passport that already enters Argentina visa-free and want six to twelve months on a published legal basis rather than a tourist stamp.
- Income floor
- None published. The official requirements ask for proof of the remote activity — contracts, employer letters, income receipts, certifications — and at least one occupational reference, but set no monetary threshold.
- Duration
- 180 days, renewable once for an equal period.
- Cost
- Residencia transitoria on the migration fee schedule set by Decreto 584/2024: 32 UMSM for non-Mercosur nationals, 16 UMSM for Mercosur nationals, the UMSM standing at ARS 1,000. Several commercial guides instead quote a flat USD 200 for the electronic entry route; the two figures are not reconciled on any government page.
- Processing
- No statutory or published time. Commercial guides report roughly 30 to 45 days for the electronic entry application; the in-country filing is resolved by the local Migraciones delegation.
- Eligibility
- Restricted to nationals of countries that do not require a tourist visa for Argentina. The work must be remote services rendered by computing, telecommunications or similar means for individuals or legal entities domiciled abroad. Argentine criminal-record certificate for applicants aged 16 and over on the in-country filing; proof of lawful entry and of an address in Argentina. Since Decreto 366/2025 a sworn declaration of health insurance is required on admission.
- Work rights
- Remote work for persons or entities domiciled abroad only, as written into the legal definition. It confers no authorisation to work for an Argentine employer or to take on Argentine clients.
- Dependants
- The published requirements address the individual applicant only; no dependant provision exists for this category, so partners and children need a status of their own.
- Leads to
- No. The category is transitory residence, not temporary or permanent residence; naturalisation under the 2025 decree requires two years of continuous legal residence with uninterrupted presence in the country.
- Apply
- Either online from abroad through the Tramitación de Ingreso Electrónica for digital nomads on migraciones.gob.ar, or in Argentina at a Dirección Nacional de Migraciones delegation — the in-country filing requires physical presence and is done without an agent.
Documents Signed application stating personal details and the independent work carried out · Short CV showing relevant experience and level of education · Valid passport, or a Mercosur travel document under Annex I of DC-46-2015-CMC · Current photograph taken at the time of filing, face only, white background · Proof of the work activity: contracts, company letters, income receipts or certifications, with at least one occupational reference · Argentine criminal-record certificate from the Registro Nacional de Reincidencia (in-country filing, age 16+) · Proof of address in Argentina and evidence of lawful entry (in-country filing) · Foreign documents apostilled or legalised by an Argentine consulate, and translated by a sworn Argentine translator

Without a visa, by passport
The stay you get on arrival, and whether working remotely on it is tolerated
- EU / EEA / Switzerland90 days, extendable once for a further 90 at a Migraciones delegation before the original period expiresGrey. The tourist category admits no gainful activity in Argentina, and remote work for foreign clients is not addressed in it; the transitory nomad residence was created as the published way to do exactly this, which is why longer stays are safer on that permit.
- United Kingdom90 days, extendable once for a further 90Grey, on the same footing as EU passports. Widely done and not enforced against short-stay visitors, but nothing published authorises it.
- United States90 days, extendable once for a further 90Grey. No reciprocity fee applies. Eligible for the transitory nomad residence, since the passport enters visa-free.
- Canada90 days, extendable once for a further 90Grey; same position as the United States, and eligible for the nomad category.
- Australia90 days visa-free as a tourist, extendable once for a further 90Grey on the tourist stamp; Australia is also a Working Holiday partner, which is the published way for under-31s to work while in the country.
- New Zealand90 days, extendable once for a further 90Grey on the tourist stamp; also a Working Holiday partner country.
- Japan90 days, extendable once for a further 90Grey. Eligible for the transitory nomad residence.
- South Africa90 days, extendable once for a further 90 — the only African nationality on Argentina's visa-exempt listGrey. Visa-exempt status makes South African passport holders eligible for the transitory nomad residence.
- Brazil and other Mercosur states90 days as a tourist, and entry is possible on a national identity card rather than a passportGrey on the tourist stamp, but largely moot: Mercosur nationality gives a two-year temporary residence with full work rights for a fraction of the cost.
- IndiaVisa normally required. Since Resolución 353/2025, in force from August 2025, Indian nationals travelling purely as tourists need neither an Argentine consular visa nor an AVE if they hold a US tourist or business visa valid for the whole stay; entry is then for up to 90 days, extendable onceForbidden in practice as a work route: the tourist category admits no gainful activity, and the nomad residence is restricted to nationalities that enter visa-free, which the US-visa concession does not straightforwardly confer. Longer remote-work stays point to the rentista or pensionado categories.
- ChinaVisa normally required, with the AVE electronic travel authorisation available. Resolución 316/2025 exempts Chinese nationals holding a valid US visa in the qualifying categories from both the AVE and the consular visa for tourism, for up to 90 daysSame position as India: the concession covers tourism only, and the nomad residence is built for visa-exempt nationalities.
Tax
When the country starts counting you as its taxpayer
- Residency trigger
- Foreign nationals become Argentine tax residents on obtaining permanent residence, or on completing twelve months in the country holding temporary authorisations. Residents are taxed on worldwide income; non-residents only on Argentine-source income, which ordinarily leaves foreign-source earnings outside the base. A separate six-month test — living in the country for more than six months of the fiscal year — governs entitlement to the personal deductions. Residence is lost on acquiring permanent residence in another state or on twelve continuous months abroad, with effect from the first day of the following month.
- Special regime
- None. Argentina publishes no flat-rate, exemption or NHR-style regime for newcomers, remote workers or holders of the nomad category, and the nomad residence carries no tax status of its own.
- Social security
- The nomad category is legally confined to services rendered for persons or entities domiciled abroad, so no Argentine payroll or self-employed registration arises from it and no contributions are triggered by the permit. Invoicing Argentine clients is a different activity, outside what that permit authorises, and requires local tax registration. Since Decreto 366/2025 anyone seeking admission must present a sworn declaration of health insurance: national public facilities give free care to non-permanent residents only in emergencies, and otherwise require insurance or payment.
- Treaties
- Argentina maintains a network of double-taxation treaties. For someone below the residence thresholds the treaties rarely bite, because foreign-source income of a non-resident is outside the Argentine base in any case. They matter once the twelve-month temporary-authorisation clock or permanent residence turns worldwide income taxable, at which point the treaty with the payer's country determines which state taxes employment income and business profits and how credits are given.
Practicalities
- Tax number
- A CUIL is issued by ANSES and a CDI or CUIT by ARCA, the tax authority that replaced AFIP. Banks and landlords generally want one of these before a passport alone will do.
- Bank account
- Public banks are required to open a savings account for migrants — the cuenta para migrantes — against a passport, a CUIL and proof of address. Full product access, and dollar accounts in particular, is usually easier once a DNI has been issued; a Migraciones precaria plus CUIL is the common interim. Mercado Pago is reported to be openable on a passport alone.
- Health insurance
- Article 34 of Decreto 366/2025 requires a sworn declaration of health cover from foreigners seeking admission. Under Article 8, national public establishments give free care only in emergencies to those who are not permanent residents; other treatment requires insurance or prepayment.
- Extending a tourist stay
- A prórroga de permanencia may be granted once for a period equal to the original, applied for at any Dirección Nacional de Migraciones delegation before the granted period expires.
- Overstay
- A fine is assessed and paid at the point of departure, or in advance at the main Migraciones office or the airport offices, after which departure is expected within ten days. Reported amounts in 2025 sat around ARS 40,000 to 50,000 and are adjusted periodically; the figure is not published as a fixed schedule and reports differ. Decreto 366/2025 widened the grounds for cancelling residence and expulsion and shortened appeal windows, with permanent re-entry bans for conviction-based expulsions and a five-year minimum otherwise.
- Foreign documents
- Everything issued abroad needs an apostille or Argentine consular legalisation, and anything not in Spanish needs translation by a sworn Argentine translator with the translators' association stamp. This is the single largest source of delay on the rentista, pensionado and in-country nomad filings.
- Where filings happen
- In-country residence applications run through RaDEx, the online system at migraciones.gob.ar, followed by an in-person appointment; the applicant must be inside Argentina and no agent is required. The nomad category can alternatively be applied for from abroad through the electronic entry system.
Argentina: a 180-day nomad permit, and a peso that no longer makes it cheap
Where remote workers base, and what it now costs
Buenos Aires absorbs most of the traffic, and within it Palermo, Villa Crespo, San Telmo, Recoleta and Belgrano. Córdoba, Mendoza and Bariloche take the rest, the last two on the strength of proximity to the Andes rather than any infrastructure advantage.
The economics have moved sharply against the arbitrage that drew people in 2022 and 2023. Furnished one-bedroom flats in the central Buenos Aires neighbourhoods are advertised in dollars, commonly quoted at USD 600 to 1,100 a month and higher in Palermo and Recoleta, with all-in monthly budgets reported between USD 900 and 1,800. These are cost-tracker and operator figures rather than official statistics and they vary widely between sources.
What the process actually involves
The nomad category splits into two filings that are not equivalent. The electronic entry route is done online before travelling and asks for little: an application letter, a CV, passport pages, a photograph taken at the moment of filing and evidence of the remote work with at least one occupational reference. The in-country filing at a Migraciones delegation adds an Argentine criminal-record certificate, proof of address and proof of lawful entry, and requires the applicant to be physically in the country.
Two things are conspicuously absent from the official pages: an income threshold and a processing time. Commercial guides fill the gap with figures of roughly 30 to 45 days and a USD 200 fee, neither of which appears on a government page — the published fee schedule prices transitory residence at 32 UMSM for non-Mercosur nationals. The discrepancy is unresolved in the sources.
The heavier friction on the rentista and pensionado routes is documentary rather than financial. Every foreign certificate needs an apostille or consular legalisation and a sworn Spanish translation, and the rentista category additionally requires proof that the money entered Argentina through a central-bank-authorised institution — a condition that catches applicants who keep their funds offshore.
Banking and daily money
The sequence that works is a tax number first, then a bank. A CUIL from ANSES or a CDI from ARCA, plus a passport and proof of address, is enough to compel a public bank to open the migrant savings account; the wider range of products, and dollar accounts in particular, tends to wait for a DNI.
The informal exchange-rate premium that once made Argentina unusually cheap for anyone arriving with dollars has largely closed. Reports through 2026 describe the parallel and official rates as broadly converged, with foreign cards settling near the MEP rate, so the practice of carrying cash to change on the street has lost most of its point. Rent, meanwhile, is increasingly quoted in dollars regardless.
What is changing
The May 2025 emergency decree is the dominant fact. It did not abolish any route a remote worker uses, but it changed the surrounding arithmetic: health insurance is now declared on admission, national public hospitals charge non-permanent residents outside emergencies, and the citizenship clock demands two years of continuous residence with uninterrupted presence in the country — a condition that is close to incompatible with the travel patterns of most people on a nomad permit.
In the other direction, entry has been eased. The 2025 resolutions covering Indian and Chinese nationals let tourists holding a valid US visa arrive without an Argentine visa or an AVE, and the AVE fee was dropped. Neither concession extends to the nomad residence, which remains restricted to nationalities that enter visa-free in their own right.
The rentista and pensionado thresholds now move monthly. Because they are fixed at five minimum wages and the government has published an SMVM schedule running to April 2027, the qualifying income rises every month with no rule change required — a point worth checking against the month of filing rather than the month of research.
