Indonesia

Indonesia has a dedicated one-year Remote Worker permit (E33G) for people employed by a company outside the country and earning at least USD 60,000 a year, alongside a 30-day visa-free or visa-on-arrival stay that most nomads actually use for shorter visits. Investor and employer-sponsored permits exist but are built for businesses, not freelancers, and there is no freelance or self-employment permit. The one thing to know before applying: holding any limited-stay permit is treated by the tax office as evidence of intent to reside, so E33G holders are widely reported to become Indonesian tax residents from arrival rather than after 183 days.

  1. Nomad visa

Remote Worker Visa / Digital Nomad KITAS (E33G)

Visa Pekerja Jarak Jauh (E33G) – Izin Tinggal Terbatas Remote Worker / Limited Stay Permit for Remote Workers

Employees of a company established outside Indonesia who want to live in Indonesia for up to a year while working only for that foreign employer or foreign clients.

    Income floor
Income of at least USD 60,000 per year shown through a bank account, plus proof of living expenses of at least USD 2,000 shown by three months of bank statements (Directorate General of Immigration listing). Agents commonly ask for three to twelve months of statements or payslips and describe the floor as roughly USD 5,000 a month.
    Duration
Limited stay permit of one year; the visa must be used to enter within 90 days of issue or it lapses. Renewal is disputed: the immigration listing describes a one-year stay, one agency says it does not extend and a new application is needed, others report up to five renewals applied inconsistently, with many holders leaving on an exit permit and reapplying from abroad.
    Cost
Directorate General of Immigration listing: USD 150 visa fee plus IDR 2,700,000 for a one-year stay. Agencies quote different totals (one cites IDR 7,000,000 in government fees plus IDR 6,000,000 service fee; another cites IDR 1–2 million in government fees and IDR 12–18 million all-in with agent, apostille and translation), so the government fee is disputed between sources.
    Processing
No statutory time published. Agents report about 7 to 14 working days for e-visa approval once documents are complete, and 4 to 8 weeks end to end including document preparation, stretching to 10 to 12 weeks for incomplete files.
    Eligibility
Open to all nationalities. Must work remotely online for a company outside Indonesia under an employment agreement; passport valid at least six months; international health insurance (travel insurance is reported as not accepted); applications are made from outside Indonesia and switching from a tourist stay in-country is reported as a refusal ground. No local work, sales of goods or services, or payment from Indonesian persons or companies.
    Work rights
Remote work for a foreign employer or foreign clients only. Working for an Indonesian entity, taking income from Indonesian sources, selling goods or services in Indonesia and active investment activity are expressly prohibited.
    Dependants
Reported change from December 2025 lets E33G holders sponsor a spouse, children, parents and siblings for dependant permits; dependants need separate applications with apostilled civil documents, and a dependant permit carries no work rights.
    Leads to
No published path: the permit is time-limited and does not count toward the permanent stay permit (KITAP) or citizenship.
    Apply
Online through the official e-visa portal of the Directorate General of Immigration (evisa.imigrasi.go.id), from outside Indonesia; no Indonesian sponsor required.

Documents Passport valid at least 6 months · Employment agreement with a company established outside Indonesia · Bank statements for the last 3 months showing income of at least USD 60,000 a year and living funds of at least USD 2,000 · Employer letter on letterhead stating job title, monthly salary, start date and that the work is performed for an entity outside Indonesia · Employer's certificate of incorporation (reported by agents) · International health insurance policy · Recent colour photograph and CV · Criminal record certificate, apostilled or legalised (reported by agents)

    Cost
IDR 500,000 on arrival or online, and IDR 500,000 for the extension, as published by most sources. One agency lists IDR 800,000. On 12 August 2026 the Director General of Immigration announced a proposed rise to IDR 750,000 for the online e-VOA and IDR 1,000,000 at the airport, with no effective date announced.
    Processing
Issued at the border; online e-VOA is advised three to five working days before travel.

    Dependants

Tax

When the country starts counting you as its taxpayer

Residency trigger
An individual is a domestic tax subject if they reside in Indonesia, are present for more than 183 days in any 12-month period (days need not be consecutive), or are present during a tax year with the intention to reside. Under Ministry of Finance Regulation 18/2021 that intention can be shown by a permanent stay permit card, a limited stay visa or permit valid for more than 183 days, an employment contract of 183 days or more, or a residential lease. Advisers and agents report that an E33G permit is treated as such evidence, so residency can start on arrival; one agency also reports a Directorate General of Taxes regulation PER-23/PJ/2025, effective December 2025, adding a substance-based assessment and data sharing with immigration. That regulation was not verified from the tax authority in this research.
Special regime
A four-year territorial regime under the 2021 Omnibus tax changes and PMK 18/2021 lets foreign nationals with certain expertise who become residents pay tax on Indonesian-source income only for their first four years. Advisers state it requires employment by an Indonesian entity in a listed specialist occupation, so remote-worker permit holders employed abroad are excluded. Otherwise residents pay progressive rates of 5 to 35 per cent on worldwide income, with a personal allowance of IDR 54 million for a single taxpayer.
Social security
Residents living in Indonesia for six months or more are required to join the national health scheme BPJS Kesehatan; employment-scheme contributions (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) attach to Indonesian employers and are reported not to apply to remote workers with no local employer. Rules on foreign certificates of coverage were not verified in this research.
Treaties
Indonesia has double-taxation treaties with more than 70 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and most EU states. Relief is by credit or exemption under each treaty and is not automatic: a resident must file an Indonesian return and document foreign tax paid, and a remote employee taxed at home may still owe a top-up where Indonesian rates are higher.

Practicalities

Bank account
Major banks open personal accounts for holders of a valid passport plus a limited (KITAS) or permanent (KITAP) stay permit; tourists on visa-free or VOA stays are generally refused. A tax number is not required for a basic account but is increasingly requested and is mandatory for balances above IDR 100 million.
SIM card and phone
Prepaid SIMs are registered against a passport; permit holders can register postpaid plans and multiple numbers. A foreign phone must have its IMEI registered with Customs for stays longer than 90 days or it is blocked from local networks.
Health insurance
The E33G requires international health insurance, and agents report travel insurance is rejected. Residents of six months or more are required to join BPJS Kesehatan.
Address registration
Every limited-stay permit holder must obtain a temporary residence certificate (SKTT) from the civil registry within 14 days of the permit being issued or of arrival; it is valid for the life of the permit.
Tax number
An NPWP is obtained from the local tax office with passport and permit once resident; annual returns are due by 31 March of the following year.
Arrival formalities
Since 1 September 2025 all travellers, including returning permit holders, must complete the All Indonesia Arrival Card within three days before their flight.
Overstay penalties
IDR 1,000,000 per person per day for overstays of up to 60 days, set by Government Regulation 28/2019. Beyond 60 days: deportation, detention pending removal, and entry bans of six months to ten years under Law 63/2024, extendable by a further ten years.

Indonesia: a real remote-worker permit, a strict line on local income, and tax residency that can start on day one

Where remote workers base and why

Bali, and above all the Canggu, Pererenan and Ubud areas, remains the centre of Indonesia's remote-work scene, with Jakarta a distant second for people attached to a local employer. Coworking spaces in Canggu now offer employer-of-record letters so that freelancers without a single foreign employer can meet the E33G's employment-agreement wording, an arrangement the rules do not expressly address.

The immigration authority has shifted to what it calls selective immigration. Visa-free issuances fell by almost nine tenths in the first half of 2026 while visa-on-arrival issuances passed 3.4 million, with Australians, Chinese and Indians the largest groups, and more than 10,000 administrative enforcement actions were recorded in the same period.

What applicants report about the E33G

Approvals are being granted in 2026, but refusals cluster around four things: bank statements that show a balance rather than regular deposits matching the employer letter, a single month below the income threshold in the window examined, insurance that is travel cover rather than international health cover, and criminal-record certificates without apostille or legalisation. Screenshots of statements are rejected; PDF statements on bank letterhead are expected.

The permit is issued as a single-entry visa valid 90 days for entry; the one-year stay starts on arrival and a multiple re-entry permit is needed before any trip out. Renewal is the least settled point: sources range from a flat statement that the permit does not extend, through reports of up to five inconsistent renewals, to accounts of holders taking an exit permit and reapplying from abroad. Government fees are likewise quoted differently by the immigration listing and by agencies.

Money, tax and daily admin

A local bank account is realistic only with a stay permit in hand, and branches increasingly ask for an Indonesian tax number at opening. The same permit is what triggers most of the admin: a temporary residence certificate within 14 days, IMEI registration for a foreign phone beyond 90 days, and BPJS health enrolment after six months of residence.

Tax is the trap most often reported. Because a limited-stay permit is treated as evidence of intent to reside, advisers say E33G holders are resident from arrival, taxed on worldwide income at up to 35 per cent, and outside the four-year territorial exemption reserved for specialists employed by an Indonesian entity. Treaty relief exists with more than 70 countries but must be claimed on a return.

What is changing

The visa-on-arrival fee increase announced in August 2026 is still a proposal without an effective date, and one agency already lists a higher fee than the IDR 500,000 most sources and the immigration data show. The December 2025 dependants change and the tax office's substance-based residency rule are both reported by agencies rather than confirmed from the gazette in this research, so applicants should check the primary texts before relying on either.
