Sweden

Sweden has no digital-nomad visa, and its immigration authority does not publish any tolerance for remote work on a visitor stay. Non-EU remote workers who want to stay use the residence permit for self-employed persons, an employer-sponsored work permit through a Swedish entity, a nine-month job-seeker or start-up permit for holders of a master's degree, or a one-year working-holiday permit for six nationalities; EU/EEA citizens simply move under free movement. The one thing to know before applying: the self-employed route demands SEK 200,000 in the bank, a 51 per cent stake in an established business and a decision that, for three in four applicants, takes up to 13 months.

Uppehållstillstånd för att bedriva näringsverksamhet (residence permit to run your own business)

A non-EU/EEA freelancer or founder who already runs, or will register, a Swedish company and can show industry experience, existing customers and two years of living money.

    Income floor
Savings, not income: at least SEK 200,000 in a bank account for the applicant, plus SEK 100,000 for an accompanying spouse and SEK 50,000 for each accompanying child, as stated by the Swedish Migration Agency; the business must also have funds for its expected costs and investments.
    Duration
Up to two years at first (never beyond passport validity), extendable; the agency's extension guidance describes permanent residence being possible after two years if the business is established and meets the requirements, though the application page opened this month does not repeat that.
    Cost
SEK 2,000 for the applicant, SEK 1,500 per adult family member, SEK 750 per child; Japanese citizens are exempt; no refund on refusal.
    Processing
No statutory time is published; the agency states that 75 per cent of recently decided cases were decided within 13 months.
    Eligibility
Non-EU/EEA citizens only; must own at least 51 per cent of the business and carry crucial operational responsibility; good experience in the industry and in running a business; established customer contacts or networks; relevant knowledge of Swedish or English, with very good Swedish required where the business deals extensively with Swedish suppliers or customers; passport valid for the permit period.
    Work rights
Permits running the applicant's own Swedish business, including serving Swedish and foreign clients; it is not a permit to take employment with another company.
    Dependants
Spouse, registered partner, cohabiting partner and children under 18 may apply at the same time; each pays a fee and needs relationship proof, and children need consent from any non-accompanying parent.
    Leads to
Time on the permit counts toward permanent residence; the agency's extension rules describe permanent residence being available from the two-year extension point if the business meets the requirements and the general self-support and honest-living conditions are met. Citizenship from 6 June 2026 requires eight years of habitual residence.
    Apply
From outside Sweden, through the Migration Agency's online e-service or on paper at a Swedish embassy or consulate-general in the country of residence; in-country applications are allowed only for holders of certain existing permits.

Documents Passport copies showing all personal details and validity · Bank statements for the last three months plus proof of funds to support the applicant (and family) for two years · Certificate of registration of the Swedish business, plus share or partnership documents · Contracts with customers, suppliers and for premises · Balance sheet and profit-and-loss statement, and annual accounts if the business has already traded · Language certificates for Swedish or English · Educational diplomas and certificates from previous employers · Business plan and budget

    Income floor
Monthly salary of at least 90 per cent of the Swedish median salary at the time of application: SEK 34,470 per month from 16 June 2026 (median SEK 38,300, published by Statistics Sweden); 75 per cent, SEK 28,725, for listed shortage occupations, former students and researchers, and staff of tech or life-science start-ups under five years old with fewer than 100 staff. The salary must also match Swedish collective agreements or industry practice.
    Duration
Up to two years at first, never longer than the employment contract; extendable; EU Blue Cards now run up to four years.
    Cost
SEK 2,200 for the employee, SEK 1,500 per adult family member, SEK 750 per child.
    Processing
The agency states 75 per cent of complete applications for highly qualified workers were decided within one month, and within four months for other employment.
    Eligibility
Non-EU/EEA citizens with a job offer from a Swedish employer, advertised in the EU/EEA, on terms reviewed by the relevant trade union; comprehensive health insurance is mandatory for employment of one year or less; the employer's record and any criminal history are scrutinised and can cause refusal.
    Work rights
Employment with the sponsoring Swedish employer in the stated occupation; not a permit for freelance work or for a foreign employer without Swedish presence.
    Dependants
Spouse, registered partner, cohabiting partner and children under 21 can apply at the same time; the principal must show enough income to support them.

Tax

When the country starts counting you as its taxpayer

Residency trigger
Unlimited tax liability on worldwide income arises for anyone domiciled in Sweden, anyone who stays continuously for more than six months (temporary absences do not break the count), and former residents with an essential connection to Sweden. Swedish citizens and foreigners who were resident for at least ten years are presumed to keep essential connection for five years after leaving, when the burden of proof reverses. A proposed statutory day-count (160 days in a calendar year, or 120 days in two consecutive years, counting overnight stays) had not been enacted at the time of the source consulted. Non-residents earning Swedish-source employment income are taxed at a flat 25 per cent under SINK.
Special regime
Expert tax relief (expertskatt), decided by the Taxation of Research Workers Board: 25 per cent of salary and benefits is exempt from income tax and employer contributions for seven years from arrival (decisions before 1 January 2024 had shorter periods). Qualification is automatic where monthly pay exceeds 1.5 price base amounts, about SEK 88,800 in 2026 (some guides quote SEK 88,201, which is the 2025 figure), or on merit as an expert, researcher or key person. Conditions: not a Swedish citizen; no residence or habitual abode in Sweden in the five calendar years before work starts; intended stay of at most seven years; a Swedish employer or a foreign employer with a permanent establishment in Sweden; application within three months of starting work. It does not fit freelancers or employees of a foreign company with no Swedish establishment.
Social security
Employers pay contributions of 31.42 per cent of gross pay with no cap; employees pay a 7 per cent pension fee that is fully credited against tax. A foreign employer with no permanent establishment must either register in Sweden to pay contributions or agree that the employee pays and reports them monthly, at a different rate. Self-employed people pay their own contributions on business profit. A remote employee posted from another EU/EEA state, Switzerland or the UK can stay in the home scheme with an A1 or equivalent certificate; Sweden also has bilateral social-security agreements with several non-EU countries.
Treaties
Sweden has a wide double-taxation treaty network, including the UK, United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, India, Brazil and South Africa; the Tax Agency publishes the list. For a remote employee the treaty allocates employment income to the state where the work is physically done once Swedish residence is triggered, so income earned while working from Sweden becomes Swedish-taxable with credit or exemption abroad; a contractor working from Sweden for more than six months is likely to be treated as resident and taxed on business income in Sweden.

Practicalities

Tax and ID number
Anyone staying one year or more must notify the Tax Agency of the move and is entered in the population register with a personal identity number (personnummer). Shorter stays use a coordination number (samordningsnummer), applied for in person at a state service centre with passport and any residence-permit card; the agency says it can take up to 13 weeks for a case to be assigned.
Bank account
Banks require a personnummer or a coordination number plus a residence permit or proof of employment; BankID, the national electronic ID used for most services, is issued by banks and in practice requires a personnummer. Applicants report that opening an account before registration is difficult.
SIM registration
Since 1 August 2022 prepaid SIM cards must be registered to an identity before use, either online with BankID or in a shop with a passport; free airport SIMs disappeared after the rule took effect.
Health insurance
Comprehensive private insurance covering urgent and routine care, hospitalisation, emergency dental care and repatriation is mandatory for work permits of one year or less, the job-seeker permit and the working-holiday permit (Australians exempt). People registered with a personnummer get public healthcare; EU/EEA visitors use the EHIC.
Address registration
Done through the Tax Agency's move notification, not a separate municipal step; the population register address drives healthcare, banking and post.
Driving licence
A licence from outside the EU/EEA is valid for one year after population registration, after which a Swedish licence is needed; EU/EEA licences remain valid.
Overstay
The Schengen Entry/Exit System, rolled out from 12 October 2025 and fully operational since 10 April 2026, records every non-EU entry and exit and flags overstays automatically. Sweden's Aliens Act provides fines and an entry ban for overstaying; the fixed euro amounts quoted on visa-tracker sites are not published by Swedish authorities.

Sweden: no nomad visa, a hard self-employed permit and a tightened work-permit regime

Where remote workers base themselves and why

Stockholm holds most of the foreign remote-work community, drawn by the tech and gaming employers around Södermalm and Kista that make an employer-of-record or a direct Swedish contract realistic. Gothenburg and Malmö follow, the latter partly because Copenhagen is a train ride away and the Öresund region has its own cross-border tax guidance.

Sweden is not a cheap base. Rents in Stockholm are high and first-hand leases are queued for years, so newcomers sublet. Public services, from healthcare to a bank account and BankID, run on the personal identity number, which is only issued to people staying a year or more, so a three-month stay operates largely on a foreign card and a registered prepaid SIM.

What applicants report about the process

The self-employed permit is the route most freelancers ask about and the one most often refused. The Migration Agency's own figure is that three in four decisions take up to 13 months, and case officers expect an already registered Swedish company, signed customer contracts and two years of living money in the bank. Applicants describe requests for supplementary documents months into the process, and the fee is not refunded on refusal.

Work permits move faster: a month for highly qualified roles and about four months otherwise, according to the agency. Since 1 June 2026 the salary floor has risen to 90 per cent of the median, which knocked out many junior and part-time offers, though tech start-ups under five years old and listed shortage occupations keep a lower 75 per cent level. The nine-month job-seeker permit for master's graduates is used as a bridge, since a work permit can then be filed from inside Sweden.

For the six working-holiday nationalities the process is the simplest: three months to a decision in most cases, SEK 1,500 and SEK 15,000 in savings. It cannot be extended and does not lead anywhere, which suits a single year of remote work with some local casual jobs on the side.

Banking and daily money

Sweden is close to cashless, and almost everything runs on BankID and Swish, both of which sit behind a personnummer and a Swedish bank account. People on stays under a year get a coordination number instead, which some banks accept with a residence permit and proof of income, but reports of refusals are common and waiting for the number can take up to 13 weeks.

Tax follows quickly: a continuous stay of more than six months makes a person fully liable on worldwide income, and a foreign employer with no Swedish establishment must either register for employer contributions or shift them to the employee by agreement. The expert tax relief that exempts a quarter of pay for seven years only reaches employees of Swedish or Swedish-established employers earning above roughly SEK 88,800 a month in 2026, so it rarely applies to a remote worker keeping a foreign contract.

What is changing

The direction since 2023 has been tightening for labour migrants and settlers: the salary floor for work permits has gone from SEK 13,000 to 80 per cent and now 90 per cent of the median, citizenship now needs eight years and tests, and the Entry/Exit System means a Schengen overstay is recorded automatically. Nothing in the pipeline creates a remote-work or nomad permit.

Two things to watch: a further update of the median salary each June, which moves the work-permit threshold, and the proposed statutory tax-residence day count of 160 days, which was not enacted at the time of the sources consulted and would replace the six-month test if passed.
