The scene as it stands

Muscat is not a nomad hub and does not pretend to be. Nomads.com counts around 600 remote workers in the city in September 2026, with an average stay of five days and a 7% return rate; it ranks the city 1,086th in the world with a score of 2.89 out of 5. The people who stay a month are mostly here for a reason beyond the laptop: diving, the mountains, a partner on a Gulf contract, or a deliberate escape from Dubai's prices.

Coworking is thin. Regus has the only published pricing, independent spaces such as BizHub and Grand Business Center quote on request, and none of them market to drop-ins. In practice most arrivals rotate between a fibre line at the flat, a data-heavy SIM and a handful of specialty cafés in Qurum and Al Khuwair that tolerate a laptop for a morning.

How a month actually works

The city is a 40 km ribbon along the coast and nothing is close to anything else. Nomads.com rates walkability highly inside each district but traffic safety poorly, and the honest reading is that a car or a Careem habit is part of the budget. Careem is the taxi app that works; street taxis are unmetered.

Housing is the biggest decision. Long lets are annual by default and the municipality charges a 3% registration fee on the annual rent, which is why most one-month arrivals take an Airbnb at a median of about OMR 33 ($87) a night for the first fortnight and then negotiate a furnished unit, paying the OMR 40–120 furnished premium rather than a year's commitment. Al Khuwair and Ghubrah give the best ratio of rent to cafés; Qurum gives the beach; Al Mouj gives the marina and the bill.

Money and paperwork

There is no digital nomad visa in Oman in 2026. Over a hundred nationalities, including UK, US, EU, Canadian and Australian passports, enter visa-free for 14 days; a working month needs the 30-day tourist eVisa at OMR 20 ($52), with a one-year multiple-entry option at OMR 50 ($130) for people who intend to come back. Working remotely for a foreign employer on a tourist visa is the same grey zone as everywhere else in the Gulf and is not enforced against laptop workers, but it confers no right to rent long-term or open a bank account.

The rial is pegged to the dollar, cash is still common in canteens, and cards work everywhere else. Compared with the Emirates the numbers are kinder: WorldCostOfLiving puts a single person's month at $2,338–3,382 in February 2026 and calls Muscat roughly a third cheaper than Dubai.

What recent arrivals report

The consistent notes across the 2026 guides and listings are the same three things: the city is very safe, the summer is not for working, and free wifi is worse than the line speeds suggest. Nomads.com marks general safety as good, women's safety as okay and LGBTQ+ safety as bad, and gives its power grid a top rating, which matters when the air-conditioning is the only thing between the desk and 45°C.

Rent is the pleasant surprise. April and October are shoulder months that already push past 35°C by afternoon. From May to September the city is a heat trap: July and August run 38–41°C, and in the first week of September 2026 the site showed 37°C feeling like 45°C at 47% humidity, with air quality drifting into the unhealthy band. Summer is survivable only with a car, a mall-based desk and a flat with a good air-conditioning unit, and rents do not fall to compensate.
